Today we decided to have some fun playing with air dry clay. All you need for this project is air dry clay, sculpting tools, stamps, rolling pin, and parchment paper.
Air dry clay can be found in any craft store or can be bought online and there is no need to purchase specialty sculpting tools. Use your imagination! Skewers, toothpicks, drinking straws, and cookie cutters make great tools and are items you may just have lying around the house.
Create your shapes and decorate with stamps or by carving the clay with your tools. Also, try making impressions with leaves, flowers, or any other item found in nature. We are going to turn these into necklaces or ornaments, so we added a hole in the top to place cording through once they have been dried. We found it easier to roll out the clay on parchment paper because it was easy to peel the finished project off the paper to place it out to dry. Allow the pieces to air dry fully according to the clay manufactures directions. DO NOT BAKE THE AIR DRY CLAY…lol
Once the pieces are fully dry (a few days depending on how thick the piece is), you can paint the pieces. After they are painted make sure to use a varnish. The varnish will help to seal the piece and make it waterproof.
