Last weekend, we had an amazing storm come through our area in Tucson. Earlier in the monsoon season, there were some storms that had some strong winds and very impressive lightening but they all paled in comparison to the rain that fell in the course of about fifteen minutes this past Sunday.
It was an otherwise quiet day and it looked like our chances of a storm were small but even when they are small you learn to expect the unexpected during monsoon season in Tucson! Shortly after 3:30 pm we heard the telltale sound of a clap of thunder followed by the clatter of rain hitting the tile roof. In no time, the winds picked up and it seemed like the rain was traveling in all directions (including up) at the same time. The street quickly turned into a river and the washes started running.
This was a good reminder of why we take monsoon storms so seriously. They can come in out of nowhere and in a short period of time can cause major problems. Make sure if you see these kinds of storms you turn around and not drive or walk through any areas that appear to be low lying or flooded as there is no way to tell how deep the water is or how strong the current may be.
I hope you enjoy this link to the amateur video I took from my garage during the storm!
